This hunt was my second trip to Dagestan to hunt wolves. Like last time, the hunt was planned over several days. On the first day of the hunt it was decided to help the shepherds in the foothills. It took about 3 hours to get from Makhachkala to the place where the signal of a wolf attack on cattle was received the day before. The peculiarity of hunting at the foothills in winter pastures is the absence of large areas free of bushes and reeds and frequent fog. The first day we were unlucky - we only saw jackals and foxes, which are plentiful here. On the second day we decided to go to the foothills, higher up where the fog could reach. Almost immediately, a large wolf pack was spotted in the area of the farms. We made some preparations for the wind conditions and my guide Magomed started to bait the pack with the sounds of wolf howling. There were 7 wolves in the pack and they started to approach us without any reaction. I was very surprised at the speed with which the pack approached us. It was good that all the preparations had been made and nothing could throw them off course. The wolves made their first stop 150 metres from us. This distance was more than comfortable for me in terms of shooting, but Magomed baited them again with howls and the wolves continued to move in our direction. I finally shot the first wolf that came at me from a distance of about 50 metres. The Blaser R8 223 Rem. rifle worked perfectly.
