The arid hills and mountains of North Africa, spanning from Morocco and Mauritania eastward to Libya and Chad (the Ennedi Massif). Also found in north-eastern Sudan in the Atbay Mountains. In Egypt, this species is considered extinct.

Alborz Red Sheep (Ovis gmelini gmelini x ovis vignei arkal)

Northern Iran, found in the Alborz Mountains, as well as an isolated population in the Dasht-e Kavir Desert in central northern Iran. Its range boundaries with the Armenian mouflon to the west and the trans-Caspian urial to the east are undefined.
